Visual Design / Illustration

I was approached by a private client to help create visuals for her MA in Digital Management with a focus on the future of work, the future of the digital industry and how you intentionally design the two together for an innovative, ethical and inclusive experiences.

The Challenge / Brief

The technology industry is one of the most dominant powers in modern society. Gender representation, amongst other other identity expressions, is very low. How might we all take responsibility for changing this. The client intended to tackle this challenge by creating a range of ‘Tarot’ style cards to present to leaders in the tech industry to help them to address the following points:

Understand the ecosystem that incubates leadership

See yourself in the ecosystem

Understand your own power and influence

Understand your opportunity to transform your relationship with yourself and others

Imagine a more gender expansive definition of leadership for yourself and others

Imagine new value creation under more gender expansive leadership

During the ideation process, we discussed the possibility of developing the concept into a digital format such as a web application that could be complimented by a physical context for use in workshops.

Solution

Although working to a tight budget and timeline, I chose to adopt a UCD approach to address the initial research of the project. I presented the client with a series of questions to help determine the overall look and feel of the designs:

(To develop Proto Persona)

Job Roles

Pain points / Frustrations

Daily Tasks - what is required on a daily basis

Goals / Aspirations (i.e to create a more healthy workplace)

We also discussed

Colour Palette

Other examples of cards that fuelled the inspiration of the project.

I had to manage client expectations a little as the deadline was rather tight and there was a large list of cards to design. In addition to this, the client was working on the project around her full time job. To solve the issue of time constraints, the client conducted initial user testing presenting the initial concept of the cards with a view to taking the following actions:

Edit down the selection.

Simplify the designs, using repeat key UI elements.

In an ideal world we could have spent more time testing the cards in stages in development to garner more results / data.

The designs were produced in Figma and handed over to the client in Miro. As a preface to the version 2, I developed some concepts for animation transitions and created prototypes for these.
